Did You Know?

PHOTOGRAPHY

  • Photography is the science, art, and practice of creating durable images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either electronically by means of an image sensor, or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as photographic film.
  • The word photography finds its origin in the Greek language. The root of photo means light, while graphos means drawing.
  • In 1826 or 1827, French inventor Nicephore Niepce made the “View from the Window at Le Gras,” which is the earliest surviving photograph from nature. His camera photographs required an extremely long exposure, such as 8 hours or several days!
  • Louis Daguerre took the earliest confirmed photograph of a person in 1838 while capturing a view of a Paris street. Unlike other pedestrian and horse-drawn traffic on the busy boulevard, one man having his boots polished stood sufficiently still throughout the approximately ten-minute-long exposure to be visible.
  • English inventor, William Fox Talbot had created a method of making a reasonably light-fast silver process image but had kept his work secret. In 1839 he published his method and set about improving on it. In 1840, he created the calotype process, which created a translucent negative that could be used to print multiple copies, and became the basis for present day film photography.
  • John Herschel made many contributions to the field, including the invention of the cyanotype process, which later became familiar as the “blueprint.” He was the first to use the terms photography, negative, and positive. He made the first glass negative in 1839.
